long-requested solo album from the Seattle singer-songwriter From scratchy early cassettes to the electric-tinged atmospheres on Sub Pop to the more psychedelic vibe-outs on Secretly, Damien Jurado is truly prolific. While this album was recorded before the untimely death of longtime collaborator and producer Richard Swift, Jurado states “his absence is very much felt.” In The Shape of A Storm is Jurado’s more sparse record yet, often little more than solo acoustic guitar. Heady textures and sonic collages are left behind for raw and affectionate Americana, with minimal processing on instrument and voice. This album is “an archive of previously abandoned songs”, but there is a through line of vivid nature-related metaphors that unite this collection.
