After the dissolution of NYC avant funk heroes Liquid Liquid, founding member and percussionist Dennis Young recorded a series of new age albums (as Dennis Andrew) which were released via limited cassette runs exclusively in South Korea. Fast forward to 2018 and Seoul-based revivalists Daehan Electronics have procured at least one of these albums for their first official worldwide release: Quest. Soothing, therapeutic and introspective; it’s a world away from the weirdo funk of Liquid Liquid, but listen closely to the cadences in “Cavern” or “Optimo” and you can hear the spectral kernel of Quest between the cracks. Tantric opener “Pathway” sets the vibe, and the labyrinthine underwater deepness of “Mirage” and cosmic new age twinkle of “Voices (Within)” are the high water marks, all peppered with Young’s own soothing incantations. Includes fold-out insert with archival photos and notes from Young about the album’s creation. Recommended.
