Divino Niño is a Chicago-based indie rock group that makes charmingly soulful, meditative, psychedelic, and at times bilingual, music. Guitarist Camilo Medina and bassist Javier Forero met as kids in Bogota, Columbia, reconnecting by accident when both of their families moved to Miami. While studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, they met guitarist Guillermo Rodriguez and drummer Pierce Codina, finishing the quartet. Opening track “Foam” is classic Chic guitar, quirky keyboard flourishes, and wistful lyrics. “Queiro” is dizzy flanged guitars and reverberating keyboard vamps, “Flamingo” is tinker toy drums and hazy keyboard melodies. The album closes with the restrained psychedelia of “Cosmic Flower”, megaphone vocals and keyboard blur at just the edges, sorta like you just did a microdose of something fun. The album artwork was designed by Camilo from the group and reminds this author of a fresh, private press take on the ground well-trod by the likes of Keith Rankin and Robert Beatty. This record is pressed on limited edition transparent orange vinyl and includes a printed inner sleeve with photos and lyrics.
