Lab Overview

Originally released in 2011, Lumiere is Dustin O'Halloran's third solo LP and his first for FatCat's dedicated orchestral imprint, 130701. His well received debut and sophomore efforts showcased O'Halloran's ability to compose elegant and intuitive music (his score for Sofia Coppola's marie Antoinette is another body of work that he is widely recognized for), and for Lumiere, he applies the same nuanced touches but at the same time takes an "unprecedented step forward in terms of timbral palette and harmony." Partly responsible for the stylistic leap is the guests that appear on the album: NYC's ACME Quartet, Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid, and young musicians like Peter Broderick contribute, adding interesting textures for a more dense overall sound. Check out "Opus 44," "We Move Lightly," "Fragile N.4," and "Opus 55."
