Flume is an Australian record producer and DJ who is considered a pioneer of the future bass genre, which includes artists such as Cashmere Cat, James Blake, and Hudson Mohawke. On previous releases, Flume has collaborated with the likes of Chet Faker, Vic Mensa, Little Dragon, Raekwon, and Beck. 2019’s Hi This is Flume is his first LP release since 2016, following stints assisting on albums by Vince Staples and Lorde. Hi This is Flume is a return to his more experimental roots, a purposeful change of style due to his boredom with mainstream EDM sounds. His goal was to expose his fans "to more left-field electronic music”, which resulted in his most idiosyncratic work to date. “How To Build a Relationship” is blown-out drums and a fierce guest vocal from JPEGMAFIA, rapid-fire phaser sounds and erratic tempo. SOPHIE appears twice, starting with a Flume & Eprom remix of Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides track “Is It Cold In The Water” and followed by a guest vocal on “Voices”. “High Beams” begins with clattering metallic percussion, providing suitable backing for Slowthai’s grime-inspired flow. The other tracks maintain a rugged flow, the mixtape is 38 minutes but seems to be over in an instant. This record is pressed on white colored vinyl and includes a large two-sided fold-out poster.
