Fumio Miyashita is a musician, music therapist, and innovator of Healing Music in Japan. His musical career began in 1966, leading to him forming the prog rock groups Far Out and Fear East Family Band. In 1969, he appeared in the original Tokyo performance of the infamous hippie-era musical Hair. He had an interest in oriental philosophy from a young age, but became interested in oriental medicine after a positive experience with acupuncture following an injury. He moved to the US in 1977 to begin a serious research effort into music therapy, which concluded with his return in Japan in 1981. He established Biwa Studio in the Shinshu Iizuna Highlands, which boasts an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level. He began to self-produce and self-release musical works, primarily left-field electronic compositions that cover the themes of healing and relaxation. He passed way in 2003 after the creation of over 130 works and live performances at many iconic shrines and temples in Japan. Wave is one of his earliest releases and was originally issued on cassette and CD-R in 1983. “Mother Earth” is soothing synth tones that seem to float in midair, “Breath” features spine-tingling synth leads. “Wave” rounds out the disc with layers of keys that shift and sparkle, often entering blissful drone territory.
