  • This ish is DAMN FONKY and CLEEAN! The re-press sounds miraculously better than the "clean" original that I own, maxing out Funkadelic's pure heavy essence. For real, there is some serious things happening on this piece of wax. I'll save the history lesson here and say that pretty much every track on here is funk/rock heat. The title track, Maggot Brain, is arguably the best guitar solo in any rock song. Supposedly George told guitarist,Eddie Hazel, while trippin balls off "Yellow Sunshine", to play the first half as if he heard that his mom just died, and in one take, the 10 minute psychedelic "Maggot Brain," was born. The rest of this album bangs from slumping funk and rock to gospel, and blues, all with that spontaneous feel that has influenced dance, hip hop, and pop producers for years. Check the beat on "You and Your Folks," the track "Super Stupid" which rocks on some ill Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsy's" tip, and the gospel bump of, "Hit It and Quit It." I could go on, but you already know this is a classic. Heavy as funk, spaced out as can be, but all better to lift you with. 7 tracks total, Euro import on the original Westbound label.

    • black vinyl pressing
    • European import
    • printed insert
    • original release year: 1971
    • music label: Westbound 2023
