Love the simplicity of this Jamie XX release. The single is edited down to its purest form: minimal artwork (with just enough pop from the color combination and die-cut), no unnecessary remixes, one song per side. Like the physical format, "Girl" is an exercise in nuances. Jamie manipulates equal parts (maybe that bass dominates a bit) into a long simmering soup full of layers and small sparks. "Sleep Sound" takes a similar low-key approach, definitely on the smokers' tip. When I'm writing these reviews, I always try to envision what situation a record would suit. I'm picturing sunny early afternoon, East Village, nothing the F to do, maybe eat, and go back to half-sleep. Recommended.
