  • Debut studio album from Brazil's Jorge Ben. Samba Esquema Novo was originally released in 1963 and introduced the light yet propulsive rhythms which would give Jorge Ben a decades long career in Brazilian pop. The album is filled with whirling bossa nova rhythms and big band sounds, but is offset by Ben's guitar playing and signature vocal style. Coming out of the bossa nova movement that was spearheaded by Antônio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, Ben set himself apart with Samba Esquema Novo (literally New Style Samba). While it is not the pared down, percussion driven sound he would eventually develop, the album made a lasting impression throughout the world. Hits like "Mas que Nada" and "Chove Chuva" would go on to be covered by a wide array of artists. Twelve tracks in all.
