UK selector Josey Rebelle is rising fast, and for good reason. For a minute now I’ve heard people refer to her exclusively in whispered tones, gushing about her early morning Sustain Release set or force feeding me recent mixes. In this case it’s the Josey In Space mix for NYC’s Beats In Space, following an equally thrilling inaugural entry from Powder. Folding in Detroit techno, jungle, jazz and ambient for a remarkably transportive 71 minutes, the entire mix is definitely worth a stream, but I’m all hot and bothered over this 12” sampler for its inclusion of Rogue Unit’s “Dance Of The Sarooes (Nookie Remix),” a masterclass in drum&bass artistry from garage king Steve Gurley, punched up to god level by the supremely underrated Gavin Cheung. The other 3 cuts showcase Josey’s inimitable UK style, by turns skippy (Shy One’s “Route II Romeos”), jazzy (Access 58’s “Jazz Dreams”) and divine (Fotomachine’s “BBoy”). All four tracks appear in their full unmixed form, with double sided insert featuring extensive liner notes from Josey. Recommended.
