Headspace follows up Levitation Room’s acid-soaked 2016 debut Ethos with Headspace, further expanding upon their brand of reconfigured sixties-esque psychedelia. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 2012 by best pals Julian Porte and Gabriel Fernandez, who began their musical collaboration in a punk band called The Hits. They discovered their drummer Johnathan Martin when he borrowed a harmonica from them at a party, and soon added bassist and vocalist Jonathan Thiemens. Headspace integrates elements of soul, R&B, and heavier rock elements, a pleasant addition to the reverent and authentic garage rock of their debut. “Mr. Polydactyl Cat” begins the disc with heady electric guitar that warps and drifts around smooth organ lines, monotone spoken vocals and flanged solos. “2025” is psychedelia with twang, sharp drumrolls and kaleidoscopic guitar. “Stars Speak Softly” is an AOR-style ballad, “Ooh Child” is a charming West Coast take on classic soul. Packaged in a lovely die-cut sleeve with reversible artwork, this record is pressed on indie exclusive “blood splatter” colored vinyl and limited to 250 copies.
