Mitski never scared. The first song of hers I remember hearing was the gruff "My Body's Made Of Crushed Little Stars." It just screams bloody guitar strings and smelly armpits. And yelling "Kill Me, Jerusalem" over and over is some IDGAF exegesis come arthouse climax. Puberty 2 is such a well conceived album... so much depth and risk-taking, cut with just enough pop to sell out venues along the L. Rotund bald dudes with forearm ink and Fred Perry polos might come after me for saying this, but Puberty (up to "Stars") might just be a descendent of Doolittle in its flow and frequency. Something about how it keeps you unbalanced with pretty / weird / aggro. Extra points for Asian representation, get it sister.
