Music From Memory never disappoints. The Netherlands-based label has quickly become a favorite at the Lab (both the office & NYC store) with diverse, high quality releases that dig deeper than the rest. While previous releases focused on ambient, avant-experimental, and balearic sounds, this one leans to the funkier side of things. For those unfamiliar (which is probably most of you), Napoleon Cherry is an elusive and mysterious Philly musician with a only a couple of private press releases from the late 80's / early 90's (under his own name and the Cool Waters alias). Basically, he is kind of the epitome of outsider DIY funk and R&B with a heavy dose of lo-fi aesthetics. The original pressings of his releases are impossibly rare and expensive, so this compilation from MFM is a blessing. Check "Clap Your Hands," "Rejuvination," "Know I'm Not the One," "Stay With Me," and more. Fans of PPU, Uku Kuut, that Personal Space comp, and cocktail jazz need this asap. Recommended.
