  • The world is ending, so let’s party away. “1999 was pretty different for a message. Not your average bubblegum hit,” says Matt Fink, the keyboardist for Prince (RIP)’s band, the Revolution. With his 5th studio album, Prince won over the mainstream without conceding his fabulous philosophy on dance, music, sex, romance, one night stands, and other facets of life. “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious,” and “1999” are the big hits, and songs like “Lady Cab Driver,” with its use of street sounds, and “Something in the Water,” which is built on the Linn drum machine, are very experimental (as was the overt use of synths throughout the album) in the pop context of 1982, the year of the album’s release. 1999 would go on to influence r&b, pop, and dance sounds for many years to come, and it effectively set the stage for Prince’s magnum opus, Purple Rain.
