Quentin Tarantino is likely the most imitated director of his generation, but his record collection has proved nearly as influential. “One of the things I do when I am starting a movie, when I’m writing a movie or when I have an idea for a film is, I go through my record collection and just start playing songs, trying to find the personality of the movie, find the spirit of the movie.” It’s impossible to hear the speedy yet drawling instrumental surf Rock of Dick Dale’s “Misirlou” without thinking about Jules and Vincent kicking some ass, or more recently, his integration of a stomping, organ-heavy Vanilla Fudge rendition of vintage Motown standard “You Keep Me Hanging’ On” in the most harrowing scene of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. This compilation collects additional music appearing in and inspired by his films including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Vol. 1, Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, and Death Proof. Featured artists include Serge Gainsbourg, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Al Green, Dusty Springfield, The Mamas and the Papas, Bobby Womac, The Meters, and more. This version is pressed on one red and one yellow LP.
