Rich Medina started Jump ’N’ Funk over 15 years ago, and the party’s aim to raise awareness for Fela Kuti’s musical message has reached dancefloors around the globe. A true celebration of Kuti’s music, political, and cultural legacy, the event is the ultimate platform for highlighting “Afro-Life across the Black Diaspora,” and this eclectic compilation from the DJ/producer is a direct reflection of such spirit. The selections reference, sample, or are inspired by Kuti, and tracks by the great man are also included. In addition, Seun Kuti (Fela’s son) and Tony Allen flesh out the album, which is covered by artwork courtesy of Lemi Ghariokwu, a “fabled Nigerian artist” who is responsible for some of Fela Kuti’s most iconic cover art. Other picks include tracks from Atjazz, Jojo Project, River ocean, Wale Oyejide, Original Nairobi Afro Band, Damn!, Antibalas, Jungle By Night, and Rich Medina himself that demonstrate Afro-Beat’s influence on other genres.
