Debut release from Solange Knowles' Saint Heron imprint. In addition to taking up vocal duties like her big sister, Solange also assumes the role of curator and tastemaker here on this exquisite collection of contemporary "alt-r&b" gems. The Saint Heron compilation is sort of a stylistic showcase of sorts for the rapidly expanding new style of alternative r&b made popular by The Weeknd. The tracks are diverse and different, and compared to conventional r&b they are minimalist, atmospheric, freeform, and forward. Check the style from Lab favorite Kelela who's tracks "Bankhead" and "Go All Night" have been getting steady play at the office, or Drake and SBTRKT collaborator Sampha's lush "Beneath The Trees," and BC Kingdom's slow and sensual "Lockup." Additional contributions come from ex-Bad Boy singer Cassie, Starchild, Petite Noir, and Solange herself with the slyly titled "Cash In." Playing this through is like a breath of fresh air. 12 tracks, recommended.
