“In a sea of love, you and me belong, endless together.” Sanctuary Lakes is the duo of Tim Hoey (Cut Copy) and Andy Szekeres (Midnight Juggernauts) two veterans of the 2000’s dance-indie-electro-punk scenes. Yadda yadda yadda Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem, The Presets - you know all this stuff. This new project was conceived when Tim (based in NYC) was working on some one-take improvisations, sending them on to Andy, who was looking to make some new music in the wake of a personal tragedy. (The Postal Service via Australian Post, if you catch our drift.) Sanctuary Lakes is based in esoteric library records, gossamer thin electronics, and lo-fi folk psychedelia. In an interview with Vice, Tim says “We wanted Sanctuary Lakes to sound like it was completely submerged in water but that this would create a feeling of comfort rather than distress.” The disc starts with “The Long Fade Away”, sampled seashore and jangling acoustic guitar, sibilant dreamlike vocals and electronic bass. “Our Life Together” is soft-focus noodling, shimmering guitars and wonky chords. “Spring First” is a mere sketch of a song, burbling synths and reverberating strings. This album is a heady and soothing experience, perfectly suited for the waning summer months. This album is pressed on black vinyl.
