Lab Overview

Tkat, who you may know from the East Village store, arranged this exclusive Turntable Lab pressing for us. I didn't know much about this nook of the Ghostly catalog, except that when it is sporadically available, it doesn't stay in stock for long. I started getting into the album and prepping for the marketing direction. I had grown weary of downtempo albums after the genre peaked in popularity in the early aughts. It seemed that everyone was looping a jazz record and adding some Dusty Fingerus underneath. TBH, even bad sample-based downtempo didn't sound so bad; like can a collage inherently be really that bad? Boring maybe... The first thing you'll notice about Shigeto's production is that he's not your average loop and kit guy. He's like that annoying but crucial friend that was busting 360 flips while you were still trying to land kickflips one-twelfth of the time. His musical diversity, emotional range (emo-range bruh), and additional instrumentation makes this work stand out. Headphone Musica for sure. I was particularly impressed when he brought in this gorgeous layer of instrumentation only for the last couple bars of a song (whereas most producers would instinctively ride the layer as a chorus). This is one of those records that gets you with the cover (and in the case, the pressing), then pleasantly tickles your brain like your IG crush's stories.
