Do you want to get into trouble? Not much that needs to be said about this crew, famous for their club-smashing remixes for the likes of LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk as well as their inventive and evolving live shows. Their 2016 live iteration, “Soulwax Transient Program For Drums And Machinery,” served as the genesis for From Deewee, which is the first full-length Soulwax album since 2004’s Any Minute Now, not counting remix albums, DJ mixes and soundtracks (their most recent release was the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it RSD exclusive Belgica Soundtrack). Despite being recorded live in one take and featuring 3 (three, tres, trois, THREE) drummers, the album is considerably stripped down and fluid. The combination of programmed and live drums are extremely tight, the synth arpeggios bubble and wine, and the vocals are potent, recalling Violator-era Depeche Mode with even better production. “Conditions Of A Shared Belief” sounds like something that might turn up on a Minimal Wave comp, and more adventurous jams like “Is It Always Binary” and “Masterplanned” recall the polished, mechanical grooves of some of the best DFA records.
