The brilliance of this score lies in the fact that Thomas Newman, who has done music for The Shawshank Redemption, Wall-E, Finding Nemo and more, does away with much of the melodic elements in favor of percussion instruments. His bold choice to "echo and amplify" the "moral ambiguity" of the script by omitting melodic resolution in the film's themes works, and his haunting and original compositions remain distinctive and instantly recognizable for fans of the 1999 Academy Award-winning picture American Beauty. This was Newman's first of many collaboration with director Sam Mendes, and after almost 20 years, the sounds from the film are presson on vinyl for the first time, with the creepy, voyeuristic artwork designed by illustrator Matt Ryan Tobin.
