Opening with a stunning, orchestrated rendition of Geroge Gerswin's Somewhere, Blue Valentine is a stylistic departure from Tom Waits' previous albums. For one thing, the singer-songwriter relies on the guitar more, and the record feels rawer and bluesier, as the title track cleary showcaes. There are some beautiful piano-driven moments, however, such as on "Kentucky Ave," while tracks like "Romeo Is Bleeding" and "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard" key are clearly written with juke joints in mind. The record also contains perhaps the most well known song from Tom Waits, "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis."
