“THIS RECORD SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD” proclaims the inner sleeve, and we agree. Twin Peaks is a indie rock band with a strong garage influence from Chicago, IL. Twin Peaks rose from the Chicago DIY scene, and is named after the “Breastaurant” chain, not the spooky television series. Their self-released debut album Sunken arrived in 2012, a 20 minute adrenaline blast that caught the attention of Grand Jury Records, who went on to release 4 more records from the group. 2019 sees the release of Lookout Low, a major step up in sonic quality for the typically raw and rugged rockers. This album is their first collaboration with producer Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) and integrates a strong influence from 70’s Rock and Roll in addition to heady jam band sounds. Backing vocals are provided by female guitar/vocal duo Ohmme, giving new dimension to the band’s vocal arrangements. Colin Croom (who joined the band after co-producting 2014’s Wild Onion) contributes brass flourishes and takes the lead on a few tracks, a highlight being “Ferry Song”, a Skynyrd-esque ode to New Orleans ferry commutation with jaunty piano and crashing drums. Lead single “Dance Through It” has a soul-inflected swing, indicative of the vibrant, fresh energy that courses through the entire album. “Oh Mama” is relentless and rambunctious, with howled choruses and layers of fuzzy guitars and keys. This record is pressed on indie exclusive orange swirl vinyl and includes a printed inner with full lyrics and credits.
