Lab Overview

Think NPR Music Tiny Desk, with a not-so-tiny 16-piece big band reinterpreting tracks from MF DOOM + Madlib's Madvillany and Madvillainy 2. Abstract Orchestra, led by saxophonist Rob Mitchell, is inspired by The Roots with Jay-Z as well as the 40-piece orchestral arrangements by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson of J-Dilla, and the group debuted in 2017 with Dilla, which serves as the template for this record: deconstruction and re-imagining of songs like "ALL CAPS," "Accordion," "Raid," and "Fancy Clown." Madvillain projects feature heavy nods to jazz, and Abstract Orchestra's takes highlight the very interesting "reciprocal territory there has always been between jazz and hip-hop."
