Her self-titled debut and Like a Virgin put her on the fast track for pop immortality, and True Blue is the joint that pushed Madonna over the top to be one of the biggest artists of the ‘80s and beyond, right up there with other greats like Prince & Michael Jackson. Dedicated to and inspired by Sean Penn (who made was married to at the time), the album widely considered a seminal dance-pop effort, one that would prove to be the blueprint for many that came after her. “Live to Tell” was the first single, then followed “Papa Don’t Preach” and “True Blue,” a Motown-inspired tune that inspired MTV’s “Make My Video” contest.
